I think, at least until proven otherwise, if you want a really good gourmet burger in State College, The Field at Toftrees is the place to go. Sure, Kelly’s Bison Burger is delicious, but its the only fancy burger there. At The Field, you have an entire menu of burgers, not just one. We came on a Tuesday evening, and……had to wait! Can you believe it? Waiting for a table for two on a TUESDAY ?!? Unheard of. I take this a good sign that The Field is not just a weekend place, and not just for visitors who are staying at Toftrees. Our wait, wasn’t too long and we ended up with a table situated close to the fireplace and next to a window.

Another great thing about The Field, is their beer menu. It features not only beers from PA, but it rotates the selections with the seasons so there is always something new (and good) to try. They also have a wine and cocktail menu that utilizes local products such as Big Spring and Tait Farm.

I ordered The Bootlegger – which included pulled pork and ‘tobacco onions’. My husband, who normally would get anything with an egg on it (or The Lancaster burger) opted for just plain and simple, The Field Burger – LOT and cheese.
In addition to the burger menu they have a FRY MENU !!!! With flavors such as parmesan and truffle (see below), crab fries, cheese fries… the list goes one. If you have more than three people in your party its worth it to get ‘Fries for the Table’ – you will get a sheet pan of fries dumped onto your table. Since it was only the two of use, we ended up sharing one order of fries which was more than enough for both of us. We did have burgers to eat too!
For those of you who do not want a burger, what? They do have other sandwiches, salads and soups.
Normally we are not dessert order-ers but…it was my husbands birthday so we ordered the Salted Caramel Pretzel shake. The Field makes really good shakes, and if you are inclined (and willing to pay the $4 extra bucks) – will make them into Hard Shakes.
Overall, I have to say our dinner was great, again probably one of the best fancy burgers in town. Fries are awesome, beer menu is great and our server was nice and service was quick.
