Everytime I am downtown I keep eyeing Sauly Boys, but never had the chance to go in. Its a strange juxtaposition of timing in State College because just as the students leave for the semester, town becomes quiet and easier to get around just as we ramp up for the busiest time of the year. This means that heading downtown for some holiday shopping or eating is easier now than ever. Plus free parking! So…. while downtown last weekend doing some holiday shopping I decided that it was time that we finally went to Sauly Boys. Located next to Kondu, and across from Appalachian Outdoors its been open since 2016. Sauly Boys offers gourmet hot dog, fries, burgers and sandwich shop. Its an order and pay at the counter sit down and eat kind of place. Its laid back, has a fun industrial atmosphere, great menu selections and relaxed.
lets eat!
While the menu boasts many tempting burgers and sandwiches, I was in the mood for a hot dog. Toppings include – beer cheese sauce, chili cheese (what my husband got) and sauerkraut (what I got). We also ordered Sauly Fries – which includes bacon, cheese, scallions and Sauly Sauce. First, the fries; I’m adding these to my list of best fries in town. 1) the fries are perfectly fried, crisp and golden. The Sauly Fries are topped with what they call ‘crispy bacon’ on the menu – yes there were pieces of crispy bacon, but really it was like pulled pork bits, thick cut and really delicious. This is not bacon bits on fries. This is the good stuff. Other fry options on the menu are ‘Load ‘Em up (think chili cheese fries) and Louisiana Crab Bake ( crabmeat and old bay).

The dogs were not your neighbors bbq cook out dogs, these were real all beef dogs. At first I questioned just ordering one, (at Austin’s I always get two – see our write up on Austin’s Texas Hotdogs here) but one was definitely enough especially since we split the fries. My only complaint was that there could of been more sauerkraut (always more sauerkraut.)
Next time, and there will definitely be a next time, I am going to try one of the burgers – they have options like MexMix, Rocket Burger, BBC (Bacon, blue cheese). All in all, if you are downtown – and want a quick no fuss but good meal try Sauly Boy’s.
